Pioneer to Launch Recordable DVD Player for DVD-RW Disc nikkeibp.asiabiztech.com
December 2, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Pioneer Electronic Corp. this month will launch the "DVR-1000," a digital video disc player with a 7GB DVD-RW disc that can record NTSC terrestrial TV programs.
The player will be priced at 250,000 yen. (120 yen = US$1)
Users do not need to search for headers, because the new machine's "start" button executes the recording or replaying functions. A DVD-RW disc can store 99 titles, each of which can define 99 chapters. The new player is capable of about 2x play, as well as 1/2-, 1/4-, 1/8- or 1/16-slow motion play.
The DVR-1000 offers two hours of normal recording for a 4.7GB DVD-RW disc. Also, one hour to six hours of recording will be available by selecting a data transmission rate in 32 steps. That makes the new system comparable to the analog VHS format in terms of recording hours, because a two-hour VHS tape offers recording of six hours at 3x, according to its standard.
The DVR-1000 uses the real-time variable bit rate (VBR) coding system of MPEG2. Its average data transmission speed is 1.73Mbps when the recording is set at six hours.
Current DVD-Video players cannot play back the DVD-RW discs recorded by the DVR-1000, because the new machine adopts the Video Recording Format (VRF) for recording.
Pioneer will market a DVD player compatible with the VRF format as early as the summer of 2000, company officials said.
