Ref- <That is essentially my question. Every company has limited human and physical resources, when they expand their business to other areas it is management's responsibility to allocate those resources.

As Intel has begun to expand into non-core businesses, their missteps seem to have increased. Probably a coincidence. But I thought it was worth a note. >

I share your concern that Intel may be stretching itself thinner than in the past.

However the non-core business is probably not the only culprit, because these businesses use a different set of resources and manpower than the microprocesor business.

However the Segmentation Strategy is a bigger culprit because it needs more of the old resources for chip design and testing, and stretches them over a larger number of designs and products. The Merced with a brand new architecture has probably drained huge resources away from the IA-32.

My gut feel is that initially the Coppermine was under resourced, and when the design problem was discovered in June, a large task force was organized to address the problem. The impact of the task force has probably not yet been felt, because the Coppermine being shipped today is a slight tweak of the first silicon. So the task force has probably defined significant design and process enhancements which will probably make the 0.18Micron Coppermine breach the 1GHz barrier.

The kind of problems with the Coppermine have occurred in the past with older designs. But the RAMBUS problems have no precedent, and show a lack of diligence of some one at Intel.

Intel of all companies is most aware of the power of focus. So probably the same thoughts are probably uppermost in the minds of Intel's management. So Intel will probably only hang on to the successful non-core business, and take other steps to achieve better focus.
