Flatsville...
I didn't mean to be deprecating when I suggested that you hadn't thought things through. I often find myself in that state... :0) So no offense intended...
You are quite correct that the Constitution is more inclusive than originally planned. That is why the amendment process was incorporated so that it could become a living document, and not one set in stone.
Certainly few agreed with Prohibition, but somehow it managed to pass throught 3/4 of the state legislatures to become a constitutional amendment (sad day in our history I opine), but then it was just as readily was revoked by a similar vote years later.
And yes we have "come a long way baby" from suffrage only extending to landed male property owners to women and people of color. But given the times, the US was still quite the radical bastion of liberal ideas.
As for the Chinese student's ideas of freedom, in a measure economic freedom to buy what you want is an extension of personal freedom. The Chinese are a pragmatic people who realize that political systems come and go, while their people and culture continue throughout the centuries. While we think in months and years, they think in decades and centuries. Just a different mindset.
So I say, God bless the Internet and the ability for information to be made readily available to each and every person, uncut, unedited, and uncensored. It's a bit more difficult for the truth to be completely manipulated by the powers that be.
