You really (imo) need to look at in with the eyes of the people alive at the time. Indians did not live with most whites- especially not in the big cities. They were curiosities. And they were looked at either as "noble savages" or as impediments to settlers (very few people were liberal enough or had enough knowledge of the Indians- to grasp how varied the Indian cultures were OR how rich and complicated their cultures were - at this period in time all cultures were considered inferior to the Western European culture.)

This is not to say the Indians had no champions among whites- but as with the abolitionists, the champions tended to be Eastern liberals and they didn't have much impact.
