I am not sure that the concept is wholly secular, since these people easily thought in terms of an over- arching providence, but it is right to say that it was not primarily a religious concept. The fact is that persons of predominantly European descent were organizing the continent; that the United States was the dominant power on the continent; and that after the Louisiana Purchase, it was natural to look towards the Pacific. America continued to invite immigration, and land hungry newcomers were willing to venture boldly to seek their fortune. There were abuses in the process of securing the continent, granted, but there was also much heroism, and the creation of opportunity for commonfolk unknown throughout much of the Old World......or even Latin America.....
