According to a report on the local CBS station, a number (perhaps all) of the hooded vandals were part of a "family" (think Charles Manson) from Eugene, Oregon, who came to Seattle specifically to vandalize. Some of the spray painting was also apparently gang related, gang members seeing an opportunity to exercise their artistic license without risk of getting arrested since the police obviously weren't arresting vandals on that first day. In neither case were they protestors who cared a whit about the WTO, but were there for totally different purposes.
