Justice Department hires consultant to evaluate Microsoft remedies

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Justice Department hired a New
York financial consulting company Thursday to advise it on
remedies it might seek in its antitrust case against Microsoft.

Greenhill & Co. LLC, which specializes in advising technology
corporations on mergers and divestitures, was hired by the antitrust
division to help ``in analyzing financial aspects of the full range of
potential remedies in U.S. v. Microsoft, including conduct and structural relief,' the department
said.

With settlement talks under way in Chicago with a mediator, the government has given no indication
whether it will seek to break up the software giant or merely advocate court orders governing its
contracts, marketing or other conduct. Greenhill could help assess the impact various remedies
might have on Microsoft and the industry

``This hiring doesn't indicate what we are likely to recommend in court or elsewhere,' said a Justice
official, who requested anonymity. ``Nor does it indicate our view of the possible outcome of any
ongoing process in this case. Their advice will be useful in connection with all ongoing processes.'
