I don't know where you get your rumors from, but SGI doesn't depend on a single company to make its chips. For example, both NEC and Toshiba make the R10000. As for NEC considering "dropping" SGI, this doesn't make sense... NEC makes a lot of money off of selling MTI designs (remember something like 19 million MIPS chips were sold in 1996).
