Another CD-recoder...................................... globalsources.com Outlook 2000: Singapore Manufacturers take up the rallying cry of digital Singapore's main consumer electronics exports through June and July 1999 were CD-ROM drives, TVs, radios and VCRs. The EDB's new emphasis on DVD can be expected to change that. The days of the VCR are certainly numbered. Market research organization Dataquest estimates worldwide DVD player production to reach 6 million units in 1999, up from 2.2 million units in 1998. Philips Consumer Electronics predicts continued exponential growth through 2000 (see Interview). The firm, a long-time resident of Singapore, opened its first non-European DVD manufacturing facility here in March 1999, dovetailing neatly with the EDB's strategy to develop the technology. In addition to manufacturing, the facility will design new products and research new applications. Another company planning to knock a nail into the coffin of the VCR is Serial System Ltd. The firm has developed a product that it claims is a world's first: a CD video recorder. Serial System has bought into a mainland China joint venture to manufacture the recorder, which is scheduled for launch in February. Company president and CEO Eddie Chng forecasts sales to hit 100,000 units in the first year. The firm is also developing a CD-to-CD audio recorder.
