Brian,

Are your eyes so closed that you can't see the illogical nature of your statements? You say that only parts of the bible are to be taken literally and that only those who believe and study will know which parts are literal.

In order to prove that wrong, just look at the current state of christianity or any Christian thread on SI. There are people of all Christian denominations who both believe and study the Bible. Many, if not most, come up with completely different interpretations of the bible and would differ wildly about what parts should be taken literally.

Given that, then what is the problem? Either the Bible is written so that even the devout believers can not agree, or it is not to be taken literally at all. I am assuming that you won't believe that God just wrote it poorly:-)

Mark
