Technically, it is not difficult to implement. Practically, it is. In order for mass users to use it, it must scale. I mentioned earlier the problem in providing the computational resourced to SSL encrypt ecommerce data for millions of simultaneous users. It has brought down the servers of nearly every major brokerage and etailer around. The traffic from plain vanilla computing would be much more harsh. In order to implement the higher levels of security, the free computing model would have to fall by the wayside.

Currently, there is really no demand for it. Look at Hotmail, Yahoo mail, AOL, ICQ, AOL IM as well as the other web top competitors - non of them have encryption and it does not seem to be effecting demand for their product.
