Christine, your rendition of the WalMart story is correct, but it does not explain Starbuck's. Starbuck's does not underprice the locally owned businesses, although it does have more publicity money. Nor has it displaced in my neighborhood the local coffee hangout. It took space that was sitting empty after Chase acquired Chemical, space that had been sitting empty for quite a while.

Note that I do not care for Starbuck's. The coffee always tastes a bit burned.
