Hi,

Take a look at abilene.iu.edu and click on the map. All the routers are Cisco, but I need to point out all the optical layer is Nortel. Its an industry partnership for eductaion (the Internet2 Abilene network).

Working on this network and several commercial variants has convinced me of a few facts. The biggest is that there is enough market for more than one company to win.

The biggest question that comes up is:

Despite having a commanding lead in Sonet deployments, we never see Nortel folks on the CSCO thread lording it over us (and you don't see CSCO folks on the Nortel thread too much either). Why is that?

I think both of us 'get it', and the LU guys who come on this thread must feel very threatened.

John

ps The LU optical guys are now working with us on the university network. They are bringing some dwdm to the table (as are some others). At least us engineers can get along :-)
