HSBC Says Appalled by Safra's Death

" LONDON (Reuters) - HSBC Holdings Plc, which is about to complete the acquisition of Edmond Safra's Republic New York Corp, said it was appalled by the banker's sudden death on Friday. Banking sources said Safra's death would not affect the acquisition."

" The deal was put on hold in September when U.S. fund manager Martin Armstrong, a major client of Republic's futures brokerage, was charged with bilking Japanese investors out of $950 million in a securities fraud scheme."
