Amazon Busts Barnesandnoble.com

Dec 02, 1999 (Tech Web - CMP via COMTEX) -- A federal district judge
today granted a preliminary injunction prohibiting Barnesandnoble.com
from deploying technology that Amazon.com says is covered by a patent
it holds.

Amazon.com filed suit against its online competitor Oct. 20, claiming
Barnesandnoble.com was infringing on its patent for its 1-Click
technology. The technology provides a feature that stores billing and
shipping information, which eliminates the need for returning customers
to re-enter that information and lets them complete forms with one
click of the mouse. The technology was introduced on Amazon's site in
September 1997.

Because of the court's decision, Barnesandnoble.com has decided to
replace the disputed technology, "Express Lane," with "Express Checkout,
" an updated service that the company says will avoid legal problems
and significantly improve its customers' buying experience over the
current technology.

The company had planned to launch Express Checkout after the holiday
season. But it now says it will introduce the technology within the
next several days. Gus Carlson, a Barnesandnoble.com spokesman, says
deploying the new technology earlier than planned "will make us
compliant with the judge's ruling."

Another reason to avoid these internet marketing schemes.
Not only are their razor-thin margins unprofitable;
infighting between "major" entities like AMZN & BNBN only
deapens their red-ink.
Soon the market will wake up to the true market share
and real margin/profits of Brick&Mortar companies like BKS.
