Hi Stuart,

Sorry, can't help you with UMC info. I don't know much about them.

DISCLOSURE: I think I should have given a disclosure in the start of this thread. I have a business relationship with Chartered. I know of them having contracted with them on a part time basis mainly here in Silicon Valley for the past 9 years. My connection is small though and not growing. I fully expect it to end soon, not sure when, thinking months. The equipment I support is being phased out. I received no IPO stock, my only interest was acquired in the public market starting several days after the IPO date.

Your ideas are similar to a poster on the Yahoo thread, who compared the market capitalization of TSMC and CHRT versus relative wafer capacity outputs. This also came up favorably for CHRT.

The thing that intrigues me is the unresolved political situation with regard to mainland China for Taiwan. The recent earthquake tragedy there has also focused attention on that island but it is this underlying political situation that I see as an opportunity for Singapore based companies.

Singapore has a shorter political heritage than Taiwan but it appears more stable in my mind having more peacefully spun off from Malaysia about 35 years ago.

I note that TSMC has begun expansion into Singapore with a new plant coming up there perhaps for the above reasons. I remember years ago listening to Andy Grove at Intel when he spelled out their rationale for the Barbados Test facility. This concept of geo-politcal separation was one of the core reasons for that plant as I recall. The logic of the concept stuck with me. Now that foundry has become such a big business, this issue has to be considered by all foundry users. The capital barriers to entry being what they are for wafer fab, I think this bodes well for CHRT's future.
