I just got off the analysts conference call for OPTI. It was very interesting. The company was pretty conservative about earnings for the next quarter but it was clear that they expect a big increase in revenues from new products in Q3 and Q4. They are shipping their new chipsets for the desktop and laptop, and have a new audio chip that should start to ship in volume in Q4. They already have a bunch of design wins for the laptop chipset and expect many more wins to be announced in the next month or so. They expect the sales of their existing products to stay flat until the new products kick in. That means that there should be no fall off in earnings in Q2.

The company also surprised everyone at the meeting by announcing they own 15% of a private company called Tripath. Tripath has developed the worlds first low distortion digital amplifier. This is a significant breakthrough that could wind up in all sorts of products from telephone switches to consumer electronics. The other large investor in the company is Sanyo, so the Japanese consumer electronics folks have taken notice of this. This could be a big winner and would add several dollars to OPTI's book value if this comany goes public or gets bought out.

All the analysts at the meeting were asking about what OPTI planned to do to get the share price up. With almost $5 per share in cash, the company is extremely underpriced. It seemed clear that management was being very conservative and did not want to talk up the stock ahead of announcements about how the new products were selling. They did mention that they have talked about selling the company or buying back shares as a way to increase stockholder value. Everyone on the call was positive on the company.

The only thing left to do is wait for the desin win announcements for the new products to start rolling in to get the stock price over $15 per share where it belongs.
