Well, that's one of the attitudes toward the WTO, and certainly a credible one. But keep in mind that some of these groups have been objecting to the WTO for years, and nothing at all has happened. They plan the demonstrations, and bing, Clinton comes out with a speech supporting many of their views. Would he have done that if they had just kept writing letters, etc. behind the scenes?

Personally, I doubt it.

Actually, Clinton being Clinton, having said many times he is an active free trader (and acted as such) he really doesn't care about the issues of the protestors, but he cares about the environmental and big labor votes for Gore. That's why the sudden turnaround from ignoring these people for years to supporting some of their causes, even to making a broadly unpopular (to most of the 3rd world delegates) speech.
