eBay tops Media Metrix list of top e-commerce sites
biz.yahoo.com
NEW YORK, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Holiday shoppers opted to check off their gift lists online
with a visit to Web auctioneer eBay Inc. (NasdaqNM:EBAY - news), which topped Media
Metrix's list of top 10 electronic commerce sites for the week of November 28.

EBay attracted a little over one million daily visitors last week, according to Media Metrix,
an Internet market research firm, followed closely by online retailing giant Amazon.com Inc.
(NasdaqNM:AMZN - news), with about 800,000 daily visitors to its site.

Toy retailer Toys R Us Inc. (NYSE:TOY - news), which came in at No. 3, had only about
300,000 visitors, followed by eToys Inc. (NasdaqNM:ETYS - news), CDnow Inc.
(NasdaqNM:CDNW - news) and Buy.com, which all had about 200,000 visitors per day.

Most online retailers have enjoyed large percentage gains in the number of visitors who are calling up, and buying from, their
sites. An entire year of shopping and purchasing goods via the Web has boosted consumer confidence, analysts said.

Forrester Research estimates online shopping revenues will reach more than $8 billion this season, up from $3 billion in 1998,
as more than 70 million consumers choose the Web over shopping malls to do their holiday shopping.

In addition, Web sites have had an entire year to upgrade their technologies and customer service offerings after many of them
crashed during the 1998 holiday season because of overwhelming traffic volume.

Rounding off the top 10 were Vitaminshoppe.com, Barnesandnoble.com Inc. (NasdaqNM:BNBN - news), online travel agency Expedia Inc. (NasdaqNM:EXPE - news) and Webshots.com, a virtual stock photo agency where visitors can download photos to their computers.

Sites that enjoyed the largest gain in the number of visitors included newcomer ToyTime.com, an online toy retailer launched
earlier this year, which had a 127 percent jump in visitors, to about 90,000 per week.

The online arm of Toys R Us came in at No. 2 on that list, more than doubling its traffic to 307,000 a day but causing the site to
be plagued with technical problems last week.

EToys again snagged the No. 4 spot on the top gainer list, followed by QVC.com, online auction site uBid Inc.
(NasdaqNM:UBID - news), online movie retailer Reel.com Inc., KBkids.com, the online arm of Consolidated Stores Corp.
(NYSE:CNS - news), Web catalog retailer Fingerhut.com, a unit of Federated Department Stores Inc. (NYSE:FD - news),
and Wal-Mart.com (NYSE:WMT - news).
