BTW, I'm curious -- how do you decide whether people are or are not more materialistic? Just ask them? Do they define the terms the same way you do? Do they tell the truth? Just a few problems with polling!

Yeah I'm just asking them. And I'm finding by reading here and also their responses that the definition of "materialism" needs to be more clearly defined. For example, you said something that I would not classify as materialism... basically, socking a bunch of money away for your kids or old age. I wasn't really thinking of that, and about half the people I ask say exactly what you said here... that they didn't care about money and now they do (for these reasons), therefore they are more materialistic.

I was thinking more along the lines of "buying things for things sake"... example bigger houses, etc. only to impress other people, or maybe amuse yourself in a selfish manner. But thats a pretty narrow definition.... however about half the people I ask interpret "materialism" this way.

Bottom line - hire a professional poller for these complex questions!
