Treatment:
Treatment of dry gangrene involves attempts to restore appropriate blood circulation to the deprived area of tissue. This may include giving blood thinners, which decrease the risk of blood clots. Treatment of wet gangrene involves appropriate antibiotics directed against the specific bacterium or fungus. Surgery is also frequently performed to remove the area of dead and dying tissue. In extreme cases, amputation may be required, and may prove life-saving.
