My thoughts on the subject of materialistic desires:

Wanting a house, a car, and a well padded bank account for security- common sense.

Wanting a mansion, a porsche and a Swiss bank account- materialistic.

Bum on the street- They're both materialistic! A true monk might also concur.

Differing view points can be so very interesting.
