NuoMedia actually gets a decent proportion of traffic from ATHM right now, without their cooperation. Due to the ubiquity of the Internet, CASPs (I just made this one up - Consumer Application Service Providers) can capture quite a bit of the broadband vendor's constituency and cause stress on their networks without any allegiance to them whatsover. Think of how much Yahoo pays ATHM for thier broadband traffic - quite possibly nothing. This is a compelling reason why the broadband players should snatch up the young upstarts now. Overpaying at a low valuation is still less painful than ovepaying at a high valuation.

As for the performance over cable, my mother uses Cablevision's service (which is very fast BTW) and the application's speed is comparable or even faster than desktop apps. I may be biased of course. Their is an irritating latency over a 56k modem though.
