Still, I'm impressed that this "little guy" can beat mighty Intel in the MP speed race. I can't help it.
I'm mostly a bystander on this thread, but I find it interesting there is a virtual consensus that AMD is a bad investment here. Most seem to admit AMD has demonstrated some technical competence, and would have to concede that they have some decent sales channels now through boxmakers. What I question is not that they have a horrible track record, which I know they do. I wonder though if perhaps the AMD company hasn't learned a little something about the market, their industry, and how to make money going forward. With a processor product line that *appears* (key word, I know) poised to effectively compete with Intel in a large part of the market, they are intriguing at a market cap of $4.6B. But who knows, they could announce serious yield problems any day of any month.
For the record, Intel is also my largest holding (built through the DRIP, which has worked very well given the unpredictability of the share price) and one I've chosen in part for low risk. I own no AMD. With the attention on networking infrastructure and telecom, I think people may be undervaluing our future need for processing power (INTC) as well as good software. RATL, and of course MSFT, are my choices there.
