TOKYO -- Consilium, Applied Materials Inc.'s fab automation software subsidiary, announced this week at Semicon Japan 99 that it has opened a new regional office in Narita, Japan.

"Establishing this regional office enables Consilium to introduce our new FAB300 fab management products to top Japanese manufacturers," said Stephen Schwartz, Consilium's president. "As these customers move to 300-mm wafer processing, FAB300 can provide them with an advanced MES II software solution to automate and control their fabs.

The Narita office also help support customers using Consilium's established WorkStream manufacturing execution system (MES) solution.

Tatsuji Ohta will oversee the new office and report directly to Schwartz. Ohta's has for the past 10 years managed the integration of Applied Materials' equipment with computer-integrated-manufacturing (CIM) systems for over 30 Japanese customers. His group will work closely with Consilium's software development and marketing teams in the United States to advance the FAB300 Tool Interface Component (TIC), which integrates process equipment with FAB300 software.

Consilium announced the release of FAB300 Version 1.0 Semicon West in San Francisco (see July 13 story). The first version released in July is an evaluation version, with a full production-ready product scheduled for mid-2000.
