San Francisco, November 30, 1999 - Nortel Networks* is planning trials in Canada beginning in the first quarter of next year to test third generation (3G) digital radio technology expected to deliver faster, more reliable and more profitable Wireless Internet services.

Announced today at the 1999 CDMA Americas Congress, these trials represent another significant step in Nortel Networks' aggressive plans to roll out cost-effective, fully packetized, end-to-end network solutions for the new Wireless Internet.

Nortel Networks will initially deploy a cdma2000* 1XRTT trial with Bell Mobility in Ottawa, Ontario as a first step in Bell Mobility's preparations to provide commercial Wireless Internet services based on 3G radio technology.

The trial network will be used to test performance, interoperability, operational characteristics, high-speed data services and advanced wireless terminals in a live, over-the-air environment.

"The enormous growth and popularity of wireless and the Internet are increasing demand for reliable, affordable high-speed data services, including Wireless Internet access and services," said Brian O'Shaughnessy, vice-president, technology development, Bell Mobility. "This trial will help us to stay ahead of the technology curve. We expect to be among the first to offer our customers these advanced services."

The Bell Mobility trial will feature first phase cdma2000 technology - called 1XRTT - designed to double voice capacity and support data transmission speeds up to 144 kilobits per second (kbps) or 10 times the speed commonly available today. cdma2000 is ultimately expected to offer speeds up to 384 kbps for mobile and two megabits per second for stationary applications.

"Our 1XRTT trials provide the first step in delivering the most advanced voice and data solutions today and in the future for wireless subscribers," said Dave Murashige, vice-president, marketing, Wireless Solutions, Nortel Networks. "The Ottawa trial furthers our long and successful relationship with Bell Mobility."
