Doug , do not discout LMDS which is exactly wireless.
3dSL, with so many copper wire,(TV and internet access over phone line) is pure business case for every big phone company.
Fiber without ATM do not go to far, unless someone whant only comodity services, which do not pay off for fiber cost.
It is required 200 billions $ in N.America to put fiber everywere.
Do you think the cost will be pay back when you pay your 15-20$ a month from access.
Why just few days ago GM and Delphi has asked ATT tp provide
next generation IP network besed on FR and ATM (IP/ATM).
Why entire Pronto project (6 billions) in based on ATM architecture (did you listen to SBC CC?).
Why BT is building its core on ATM and will do the same what SBC is doing - ADSL over ATM.
ATM has OC-48 and more.It is part of core network and big $ is being spent as we speak.
Doug, I told you many times the facts speak for itself and
your question sometimes sounds like you have never heard about what big telcos are doing, and just read someone article who would like to see ATM gone.
There will be networks based on fiber/IP, but most profit will be made on networks with QoS: IP/ATM.
We live in real world, and ATM in general is big part of it.
BTW, why nobody has invented LMDS based on poure IP?.
LMDS is basewd on AT!!!, and is real.
