Mark..

Thank you for your response on this question of what should have been done.

Yes, they apparently had some advance evidence of potential violence. However, that "strike force" you are referring is kind of an interesting statement. Who would have constituted such a force? The National Guard?

As for using the news media for intelligence purposes, I can quite honestly say that it does occur. I worked in a military operations center for 12 months. 12 months of having 4 different TV monitors glued to CNN, local news, weather channel, and the playboy channel (just kidding.. :0)
I still remember when the guy stole the tank down in San Diego and ran it down the highway. That came to us via TV... and I also know of a Watch Team Chief who was relieved of duty for not notifying the higher ups about that event.

I hear ya on the issue of "embarassment". I'm more of a proactive kinda guy, preferring to have whatever resources I require to deal with an issue, than to suddenly be faced with a situation I'm not prepared for.

But that costs money, and apparently they were also trying to prevent creating the impression that Seattle was an armed camp.

Oh well... damned if you do and damned if you don't.

But your points are well taken.
