TOKYO (Nikkei)--Cumulative worldwide shipments of the PlayStation home game machine stood at 70.04 million units as of Thursday, manufacturer Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. reported Friday.

PlayStation is the first home-use console to reach the 70 million level, achieved within five years of its release on Dec. 3, 1994.

PlayStation this summer surpassed Nintendo Co.'s (7974) Family Computer, which was introduced in 1983 and sold worldwide 61.7 million units through the end of September.

Cumulative PlayStation shipments in Japan total 16.77 million units. For North America, the total is 25.94 million units and for Europe, 27.33 million units.
