Del,

It was very common in South and Central Illinois to build with black walnut. Forest grown limb-free trunks of 20 feet or more were common. I've seen a number of houses with walnut post and beam, framing, clapboards, stair cases, and paneling. A joy to grow, and cut, and carve and touch. Lots of people grow walnut in their wood lots or rough land. It will be around, but will cost a bundle.
