Gates: 'Personal Web' Experience

CMP Media Inc. - Saturday, December 04, 1999

Dec. 03, 1999 (Computer Reseller News - CMP via COMTEX) -- Las Vegas - It was
once expected to be the formal launchpad for the long-awaited Windows 2000. But
instead Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates used his Comdex keynote to hammer
home his company's promise to use Windows to deliver a "personal Web"
experience.

As part of that effort, Gates said next year Microsoft will deliver XML-based
development tools that will allow developers to write code that runs on a PC, PC
server or as a hosted Web service.

Gates touched on Windows 2000 reliability but failed to provide a specific release
date. Microsoft recently promised Windows 2000 RC3, the final beta version.
Windows 2000 is scheduled to hit manufacturing by the end of the year.

Microsoft also previewed its forthcoming Windows 2000 AppCenter, a server for
managing and monitoring Windows 2000 applications and Web server farms.

Gates also showed off a host of MSN-based Web companions including a
forthcoming small Internet device from Compaq Computer Corp.

Gates demonstrated personal Web technology that allows a consumer to obtain the
price of gas at the nearest gas station or the ability to download digital music to an
automobile. On the corporate side, Gates pointed to advances in digital dashboard
and wireless technologies to preserve the value of corporate memory.
