Um...re the ancient Greeks, isn't that exactly what I was saying? They were in the canyon, if you compare their ability to see the world and the universe with our own. They saw with their minds, which was the point I was trying to make. Being keen observers of the natural world didn't hurt either.

As for stripping away the "thin veneer" if you strip far enough you will get to point where only survival is at issue. But is that man's true nature? I think man has several "natures." Under stress man is like any other animal, with a few saintly exceptions, satisfying his basic needs at any expense. When man is not under stress he functions like other social animals, acting in concert with the mores of others. Why call the primitive nature true and the social nature a veneer? I see no rational basis for choosing one above the other as the "true" nature of man.
