Victor re: The guys running Alta Vista now are the same guys running it when it belonged to COMPAQ.
Not true. Alta Vista was developed by a team who were almost completely replaced after CPQ acquired DEC - partly because many of the original team had been promised by Palmer that they would IPO. When they did not, many left to go with other startups.

CPQ appointed an interim team to analyze the opportunity with AV. Rod Schrock was head of CPQ's consumer group. He was primarily responsible for the development of the spin-off plans and the deal with CMGI and was one of the few at CPQ who understood how to extract value from the property.

Other CPQ managers who went to AV were transitional managers - most did not stay with AV after the sale to CMGI. CMGI has put its own management in place for AV and for the other properties CPQ bought for the AV deal.
