Morning, Lizzie, Came across this quote and thought of the materialism question-- Democracy always makes for materialism, because the only kind of equality that you can guarantee to a whole people is, broadly speaking, physical. -Katherine Fullerton Gerould- Modes and Morals On a more personal level, "keeping up with the Joneses", is the easiest way to measure oneself and one's "success". I think a lot of people rush out and spend everything to prove they are most definitely equal, and maybe more. Here online, there is often an intellectual vying- books read, words used, since we are without the physical arena of competition. (Would intellectual materialism be an oxymoron?) Combining the concept and freedoms of democracy with what seems to be an inherent need to NOT just be equal but to one-up, leads for some interesting results.
