Rather than snarling at Del, JLA, think about the fire on Mt. Desert Island and how long it is taking for the forests to recover. What makes sense to me is what many of the major paper companies are doing today rather than clearcutting old growth stands--namely, selective cutting, tree farms--which may not be pretty but do provide the lumber and wood supplies, and increasingly innovative ways of using wood fiber. In diapers and sanitary products, for example, the skillful use of polymers can cut down on the need for fluff pulp by making the pulp that is used more efficient as a conductor of moisture....

We can preserve what is precious without destroying the ability to keep people employed. I also endorse what I have seen people do: purchase themselves tracts of old growth and donate them to the Nature Conservancy.
