<<Could someone find Gus, wake him up, and get him to comment on this KM deal? >>

Hugh, I cannot of course speak for Gus...and do not think he does message boards any more ...but we have corresponded a little - I like Gus and try to stay in touch, and I do not think he would mind if I attempted to summarize his opinions. ( but caveat emptor - this is second hand).

Gus sold his Ampex holdings this year primarily because he believed Bramson to be too conservative to lead effectively in this arena. He recently bought back in a smaller way ...before the recent surge ....because he thinks that potential news in the CMGI pipeline - the development of a personalized radio and TV station - will bring renewed net market focus on streaming media ......in other words.... as many of us believe ..... a new wave is coming and AXC will benefit from it. He will check out the new tech on ISTYLE with interest. I imagine he may enlarge his stake as conditions seem to warrant. He also mentioned that Microsoft has been hiring mathematicians at a rate second only to the CIA ...and that the result is that the windows media player is 50% more compression efficient than the real player.( I much prefer the media player myself.)

He got a laugh of surprise from the KM news ....didn't we all, but is of the offhand opinion that it probably will not sell, but that KM's magnetic pinning abilities may become of interest to the standard credit card manufacturing community. ( I have a question about that for the board ...will ask at the end of this post.)

My guess is that this exclusive agreement with UPGD is very short term ..... contingent upon rapid sales.
Nothing to lose if it doesn't fly ...a tremendous amount to be gained if it does.Ampex may be bartering their patents in a like manner with a variety of entrepreneurs over the next few years. If only a couple of many deals hit.....Look Out! The inevitable failures will not hurt. I think we will know pretty rapidly one way or the other about this deal.

My KM question is this. Glen ..Hugh...anybody want to tackle this? I am no tech obviously, but my impression has been that the proprietary aspect of the KM layer was its beneficial reaction to a bias current. So if the credit card industry as a whole wanted to use it, they couldn't just slap on a layer - they would have to change all the readers ( unlikely to happen just for a little extra stability). So I am of the opinion that smart card variants are the most likely users..if not UPGD then somebody else finally. For the simple reason that they are going to have to put new readers in place anyway - no widespread infrastructure to replace.

My question....does KM have to have that bias current...or can it be just a layer?
