Shoot to wound seems acceptable, although the die-hard gun nuts would say that is unwise. Seems OK to me if you're a good shot. I guess just brandishing would suffice to prevent some punk from throwing a garbage can through your plate glass window.

It is too bad, though, that 30-40 rowdies are what grabbed media attention. Maybe TV media were happy to not have to report on the motives of the more reasoned people there.
