Ah, you are assuming that renewable resources are, in fact, renewed so there is no expense to humanity. The problem with clearcutting is that it is often not renewed, i.e., reforested, particularly on land owned by small property owners who sell cutting rights and cannot afford reforestation. Everyone likes to point the finger at the large companies, but they can afford reforestation and do it. They can also afford flexibility in the woods that they use and cut accordingly on their own holdings and fee timberlands. The small property owner just needs the money.

You know that you are speaking to a libertarian, one of the foremost defenders of property owners. I have been posting some of my thoughts on ways to avoid infringing on those rights while preserving tracts that are special.
