In California many of the native oaks were cut down to make developments. We have several species of very slow growing oaks- and they are being replaced with things like mulberries, Acacias, Carob trees, etc- fast growing, non-native species.

Of course I have the same problem with people planting high water requiring lawns in deserts- and then bitching and moaning about how they need more water to keep them green. I haven't landscaped with all native vegetation because I didn't have the time ot research it- but we have planted a native oak in our back yard. And my husband hikes almost every weekend and plants acorns as he walks. He soaks them first- and then takes them out in baggies and plants them along the arroyos. He tells me he will be the Johnny Appleseed of oak trees.
