There aren't very many aliens that you can prove are aliens.

THAT is what provides the challenge.

As for what constitutes too many people, NO ONE can prove that, it's a matter of opinion. There are more than enough resources to support the current population but humans being imperfect and territorial beings have not figured out the way to make it work as yet.
