Kennedy praises Bush Friday, 3 December 1999 14:11 (GMT)
(UPI Focus) Kennedy praises Bush BOSTON, Dec. 3 (UPI) - Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Edward M. Kennedy said Friday that Republican presidential front-runner Texas Gov. George W. Bush "meets the bar" to be president. At the same time, Kennedy told the Boston Herald he has not decided yet whether to endorse Vice President Al Gore in the Democratic presidential primary race. While criticizing Bush's record on health care, Kennedy suggested the governor run on his strong record of education reform. Kennedy also said Bush's failure to answer foreign policy questions from a Boston television station was insignificant. "The fact is, he's been a governor and there are foreign policy issues that don't come across his plate, and there's a learning curve on it," Kennedy said in a meeting with Herald editors and reporters. Kennedy, the leading liberal in the Senate, said he did not want to appear to be giving Bush his endorsement, "but I think he certainly meets the bar, the standard" to be president. He said that while Texas has a woeful record on health care, if he were Bush, he'd run on that state's education record "because they've made important strides." As to the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, Kennedy said he has not yet made up his mind between Gore and former New Jersey Gov. Bill Bradley. Kennedy, one of the Clinton-Gore administration's strongest allies, said he didn't exclude the possibility of endorsing Gore, who he said has tried to recruit his backing. "I've not really...made up a judgment," the senator said. Kennedy praised both Democratic candidates for making health care a priority and said he was confident either one would make "major progress" on the issue if elected president. -- -- |
