Well, actually, I think you're wrong there, AM. Franq was always the host of the party, not its "designated driver," and he retired to his study at least partly because the guests seemed to be trashing the house. Then he came back out and tried to shout some guidelines above the din. Cf. post 11575: "Sorry for the intrusion, folks, but watching the direction this thread is taking is like watching one of my kids get into drugs." To spare him some trouble, thread regulars themselves should do their part in helping keep things focused, responding to newbies, and so forth.

In other words, the old charts are still perfectly serviceable. It's just that from now on there will be more people on the bridge sharing the watches.

I look at it in the following way. I've always suggested newbies should bone up by reading the entire thread archives. I still believe the early posts are worth it, but I wouldn't say the same for the more recent ones. Whether the next several thousand are worth remembering is up to us.
