Police watch Jovin murder scene

By Jack Dew

NEW HAVEN ? On Dec. 4, 1998, East Rock Road was busy with police cars and investigators who took over the quiet street to investigate the slaying of Suzanne Jovin, a Yale University senior who was stabbed to death near Edgehill Road.

On Saturday, exactly one year later, the throng of officers was gone, but the police presence was there in subtle fashion.

An unmarked police car was parked on the road and the detective inside watched the spot where Jovin's body was found.

"We'll be there to look for a possible witness, if somebody is walking around with a heavy heart knowing something we should know," said Capt. Brian Sullivan, who heads the detective bureau.

But there was little to see on East Rock Road Saturday, and the rest of the street took little note of the anniversary of Jovin's murder, unsolved 365 days later.

As it was a year ago, Saturday was an unseasonably warm day, and the traffic was a predictable assortment of joggers, families out for a walk and residents doing a bit of gardening, all taking advantage of the pleasant day.

On Dec. 4, 1998, Jovin spent her day working, doing some shopping, and hosting a pizza party for Best Buddies, a program for adults with special needs.

She left the Best Buddies party at 8:30 p.m., dropped off a classmate and went to her apartment at 256 Park St. She was next seen on Old Campus, and, at 9:25 p.m., was spotted by a classmate walking north on College Street toward Elm Street.

At 9:40 p.m., East Rock Road was disrupted, and witnesses would later tell police they heard a man and a woman arguing.

At 9:45 p.m., the witnesses would say, they heard a woman screaming and, 10 minutes later, an emergency 911 call was made to police.

At 9:58 p.m. Dec. 4, 1998, police arrived at the intersection of East Rock and Edgehill and found Jovin covered in blood. She died at Yale-New Haven Hospital of 17 stab wounds to the back and neck. She was 21 years old.

Saturday, the spot where Jovin's body was found was just as it must have been before she was killed ? just a patch of sidewalk made slightly uneven by the roots of a large tree that have begun to push their way up, sending a spidery crack through the asphalt.
