I had a discussion with a friend of mine who is a Philly fan about that very play.
I said I thought it was a great Lindros drive to the net, but, it certainly would not have counted last year. There must be a happy medium between the hangnail in the crease rule of last year and this year's anything goes.
Another play in the Philly-Buf game needs some discussion:
Satan drives to the net, and I don't think he was in the crease (although he was going down), and directs the puck towards and across the goal line. The only problem is that Lindros crashed his own net on the backcheck, and knocked it off a fraction of a second before the puck would have gone in. Once again, the Sabres hear their least favorite two words - NO GOAL! - and Lindros is given a two minute penalty. The puck clearly would have been a goal had Lindros not have dislodged his own net. The resolution of this offense needs to be changed, IMHO.
As to the Sabres, they need a spark, and the Captain (Peca) is the leading offender. On Sabres' pre-game the announcers said he is just not there right now, his thoughts are elsewhere (or something to that effect). He played a poor game last night, not his physical self, some unforced giveaways.
My question is, why is he "not there" right now? These guys are highly paid professional athletes, that is not a good excuse in my mind.
