When the bias to the keeper layer is applied it is applied only to the immediate area where one bit is stored. The bias is applied in conjunction with the read head reading that bit. Without reading a bit you would not want to saturate the keeper. I suspect a solar cell could saturate the keeper though, but unless it is in conjunction with the read head you lose the benefits keeeperd media. Remember, the keeper layer keeps the stored bits of information from interacting with each other, allowing closer spacing, giving higher yield. If the entire layer is saturated at once then the bits interact with each other and you run the risk of losing information.

I am a few months from graduating with a PhD in electronic materials from UC Santa Barbara. When KM was all the rage (well at least for us AXCer's) I did a paper and talk on it for a magnetic materials class. A nice technology though, it just requires an extra wire and some modifications to the read head and electronics. This, in addition to timing and new technology killed it for the disk drive industry back in the day.
