lorrie coey, What in the world are you talking about?

It was an affair that rocked the planet.

Friends and family members became enemies. Duels were fought. Acrimony and accusation were the keynotes of exchange in an affair where evil and error triumphed for twelve years (but were ultimately defeated). The battle, known as the Dreyfus Affair, began with the ringing charge of the well-known writer Emile Zola, 'J'accuse!' Alfred Dreyfus (1859-1935) was a Jew. He was also a captain in the French army. He was made a scapegoat by the officers of the French general staff. To save themselves, these officers accused Dreyfus of the very thing they were guilty of: collusion with the national enemy, Germany. Exiled to Devil's island, Dreyfus' hair turned white. He would have committed suicide but for pleas from his family and the promise that one day he would be vindicated. He was.
