I would have done the same thing you did and made the width=0 and height=0 had I had not read SAMS Teach Yourself HTML4 in 24 hours. I really don't know why they prefer 1 to 0. They both seem to work. Perhaps some browsers misinterpret the 0? Here is a link to their on-line example of this:
