I bought Uniphase in the first batch of tech stocks that I acquired when I started investing seriously this past spring. Got it in the 60's at first, have been adding and averaging up since then. First bought it on the basis of an article in some magazine (Smart Money?) about infrastructure plays related to speed and increasing bandwidth; bought a bunch of others mentioned as well, including PMCS, VTSS, TXN, and RMBS. The basic logic of the story was what lured me in, and the increasing share price was what kept me in.

BTW, the merger with JDS-Fitel only closed over the summer; all through the spring one could have got in to UNPH knowing that it would soon dominate both the passive and active markets.

Anyway, it was only during the fall that I realized what I had, and it is the only stock in my current portfolio that is still there from May.
