El: Sorry for criticising Herr Leader! Try this for size -Rosen kept EP and EM in place even though he knew they were telling lies about the figures. Never did get to sack EM but praised him to the skies when he resigned to take up the job of CEO of another company. Sacked EP because he needed a scapegoat to hide behind in the face of the biggest barrage of shareholder class action lawsuits in the history of the company as well as peer pressure from his Wall Street cronies. Never did sack all the people you mentioned since half or more of them left on their own volition to take up better positions elsewhere or to retire having sold their shares in 1Q before they told the market how badly CPQ was doing. And while we are on the sacking issue, was very slow to sack the HR guy who was allegedly sexually harassing staff members. Rosen was behind the DEC acquisition and the plan to float Alta Vista from the beginning. I am not impressed by all the historical revisionism by Rosen toadies. How covenient for a Chairman to say that although the Board supported the CEO business plan from the beginning and takes credit for all the good things that came from it - he always had mental reservations - once it became apparent that some aspects of the plan were not working.

I know it must have been inconvenient for Rosen to move from his plush New York suite to his plush Houston suite for a few months, but I don't think that qualifies him as a courageous leader. I don't think he worked on COMPAQ's business all that time - he was busy with his other investments including the floatation of Ask Jeeves.

Your comment about Rosen saving the price from going below $18 is ridiculous. Rosen was quick to correct a shareholder at the AGM who said that the share price was $20. Rosen said it was still $24 and implied it would not go to $20. It was Rosen and his actions which sent it down to $18. Or is Rosen only responsible for the good things that happened under his rule.

Rosen was unable to find a CEO from outside the company and has not yet seen the appointment of a CFO. He may be a nice man, a rich man even a good man, but his mistakes and poor judgement have cost thousands of people a great deal of money and a good deal of time. I dont' invest in COMPAQ because of Rosen.
