As I remember, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong, the original IBM PC (1981) offered a choice of two operating systems. DEC's CPM used by Apple and Tandy and, for which thousands of applications were available, was available at $495. Or for $89 you could buy MS DOS 1.0. Even though there wasn't much software for it I recall that initially MS DOS outsold CPM on 7 out of 10 IBM's sold. Sounds like DEC tried to take advantage of monopoly power and the marketplace voted against them. BTW, this was before hard disks were available, just single sided floppies with 180kb capacity. In any case people have always bought Microsoft products because they have either been the price leader or the quality leader and often both.
